Snowbee Prestige G-XS Graphene Fly Rods - Further Information
Over the years, fly rod technology has taken occasional quantum leaps forward. First the move from split cane to fibreglass; then the next move to carbon fibre, and now, the latest development –Graphene! This amazing new technology really is a ‘game changer’ and propels Snowbee to the top of the leader board, in terms of performance and innovation.
Graphene was first discovered and isolated in 2010, by two researchers in the Physics Department of Manchester University, who went on to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics, for their discovery. Graphene really is a game-changer. In its raw form it consists of a two-dimensional, carbon sheet just one atom thick, yet 200 times stronger than steel! It is the lightest material on earth and at the molecular level, Graphene is one million times smaller than the diameter of a human hair!
Apart from its strength, another important feature of Graphene is its flexibility. In fly rod production, Graphene powder is added to the epoxy resins to enhance inherent properties such as tensile strength and flexibility.
A few years ago, the latest technology was Nano Carbon rods. The principle was that the smaller, 'round profile' Nano molecules added to the epoxy resin, were able to penetrate every void within the carbon fibre mat, far better than long-chain epoxy resin molecules. This innovation to reinforce resins, created a pre-preg material, with a flexural strength and modulus, far higher than that of conventional resin. This resulted in fly rod blanks that were lighter, crisper and more precise in action than anything previously achievable and a blank so close to 'unbreakable' in normal use as it is possible to achieve.
This principle has been taken one stage further, with the new Graphene resin technology, as Graphene atoms are 300 times smaller than the smallest nanoparticle, resulting in an even denser carbon mat, with virtually no air pockets, enhanced using autoclave ovens, which ‘bake’ the blanks under high pressure, to further expel any air pockets.
